2013 Stroke Play Championship
La Quinta Resort - Palm Springs, California
December 8-11, 2013
La Quinta Resort, in partnership with the outstanding private clubs at Bighorn and La Quinta Country Club in the California Desert provided a world-class experience for Members in attendance at the 2013 ASGA Stroke Play Championship! While days started cool, late-morning starts allowed ASGA players to take advantage of beautiful warm and dry days with temps near 70 degrees while much of the country battled snow and ice.
While we were disappointed to have three Members forced to cancel at the last minute due to travel issues, a great field was still able to participate and enjoy the hospitality and golf at the famous La Quinta Resort. As is always the case with ASGA events, the hospitality and camaraderie were featured throughout and we were thrilled to welcome six terrific new members to join us – Steve and Nancy Bloom of Clarendon Hills, IL; Bob Derks of Scottsdale, AZ; Tom Healy of Toronto, ON; Steve and Lisa Landis of Tequesta, FL; Jim and Pamela Williams of La Quinta, CA; David and Jo-Ann Willis of Vernon, ON – to their first event with ASGA and hope that we see them at many more to come.
Some great play also highlighted the week and congratulations in the Championship Division to new Member David Willis. David finished with an outstanding round of 75 at La Quinta CC, a difficult golf course that each year hosts the PGA Tour as part of the Humana Championship, to capture the title of 2013 ASGA Stroke Play Champion. Larry Den also played well, improving each day and took home the top honor in the Age 65+ Championship category. Hank Sammons took home the Low Gross title in the First Division while Laurence Schmid (who also tied at the top for Gross) claimed the Net Championship. Don White posted an outstanding final round 75, bettering his age (we won't say by how many!) to win the trophy as the low Super Senior. Congratulations also to our good friend Joe Germano who just missed out on a trophy, but shot his age or better all three rounds of the Championship! Congratulations go to Sammy Masui who played well all three days in capturing the Stableford Division. Al Nickel started his final round with a hole-in-one en route to 45 points and a trophy as the Super Senior Stableford winner.
The ladies were led by Nancy Boyle who posted the most Gross Stableford points and Sandra Schmid who took top Net honors.
2012 Stroke Play Championship
The Breakers - Palm Beach, Florida
December 9-12, 2012
The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida provided an outstanding experience for Members in attendance at the 2012 ASGA Stroke Play Championship! Daily temperatures in the 80's provided a pleasant change for those travelling from northern locations. The famous Breakers Hotel lived up to it's reputation as one of the grandest properties to be found anywhere in the World and the immaculate conditions provided by the Rees Jones Course at Breakers West proved the perfect compliment.
As is always the case with ASGA events, the hospitality and camaraderie were featured throughout and we were thrilled to welcome five terrific new members to join us – John Beirne of Orange, CT; Erich Lichtenberger of St. Petersburg, FL; Brian and Kathy O'Neill of Houston, TX; Jeff and Paula Orlandini of Rolling Hills Estates, CA; Robert and Mayra Wiessner of Rolling Hills Estates, CA – to their first event with ASGA and hope that we see them at many more to come.
Some great play also highlighted the week, and congratulations in the Championship Division to Jim McGuigan who held off a strong charge from Bill Cline capture the title of 2012 ASGA Stroke Play Champion. Larry Den opened with the round of the tournament, an even par 72 and took home the top honor in the Age 65+ Championship category. Jeff Orlandini and Roger Terry shared the Low Gross title in the First Division while Allen Northcutt (who also tied at the top for Gross) claimed the solo Net Championship and David Harkins received the Super Senior Championship trophy. There was also a tie atop the Stableford Division with co-Champions Bill Lichtenberger and James Sullivan sharing top honors. Congratulations to Brian O'Neill for his showing as the Super Senior Stableford Champion.
The ladies were led once again by Arlene McKitrick who posted rounds of 77-79 to win the Ladies Gross Championship, her 180th amateur victory! Congratulations also to Ede Rice who took home the top Net prize in the Ladies Championship as well as Ellen Northcutt who edged Betty Edwards by a single point in the Ladies Stableford competition.
We had a tremendous turnout in Palm Beach and many thanks as always to those who participated and helped to make this a very memorable week for all in attendance.
